I am somewhat puzzled by your comments since for me the main idea of
either downloading a pre-planned route from MetroGuide or creating one
directly on the GPS is specifically so that I won't have to look at the
map page and decipher it while traveling.
Instead I just glance sometimes at the data field that shows Distance
to Next turn and when it gets close I check the name of the next
street/highway and whether it'll quickly be followed by yet another
turn. Then the alarm message comes up about Approaching Turn and the
pointer arrow indicates if its to the left or right. So I know which
road to turn on and which way to go without ever needing to look at the
map and distinguish road lines from rivers or routes/etc.

For me the use of the route feature makes it much safer and easier to
just glance at the GPS to see the pointer arrow and Dist. to Next
fields rather than needing to look at and interpret a sometimes
cluttered map.
