Help me pick which is best

Hi everyone,
Like many people, I am searching for something that resembles an all
around decent gps. A little car nav, kayaking, hiking, biking, etc.
The problem is everything I seem to find has some drawback. 60cs not
enough memory, 76cs not enough memory but both have nice form factors,
floating, etc. Now I see the Magellan Explorist 500. That seems great
because it has the expandable memory for a card. Sounds great...but it
has a rechargeable battery so if you are in the middle of nowhere
that's a problem so here are my questions
1) What do people think is the best all around GPS
2) Why doesn't Garmin make expandable memory things. Magellan seems to
have overcome the water proof problems by putting it under the
battery..are they going to?
3) Anyone use the Magellan Explorist 500, is it any good? How does it
compare to the 60cs/76cs (with the obvious exception of the memory)
4) How is Direct route compared to City Select??
5) Any other units I should consider.
Any help/pointers would be great!
.
