The 76CS has a generous amount of internal memory at 115mb but it does

Not necessarily. Garmin units that accept their map products allow you
to load maps from different types of map products simultaneously. You
can have street maps and topo maps loaded, and switch between them on
the unit. You are of course limited to the max memory of the unit,
which could be more of a limitation if you want to load multiple map
products. You might need access to a computer for *that* reason, but
not to switch map types.

Thanks for the details on that. I don't have a feel for the space required to map a given region with the Garmin products, nor for the map file size limitations. That is why I said "might", I was thinking in terms of the 115mb limit.

Can you create the Garmin product map files to the hard drive? And then speed up the process by simply uploading one or more of them to the memory in the 76CS?

On the Magellans the base map is always active, and you can select one other mapping product map file from the SD card to be active along with that. Is that the same on the Garmin?

As a postscript of sorts, I said that the entire U.S. can be mapped in about 15 files for DirectRoute and Topo 3D, that is about 15 files for each product or a total of 30 files.
