OT Question, Maps on PDAs

Something I think I want.
I like Delorme's Street Atlas, buty I would like something to carry
around in the car, more convenient than a full laptop.
I've looked at the Delorme handheld program, but I don't want to set
up maps ahead of time, when I want the service is when I've taken off
somewhere and want a map at the time. I don't plan these trips at
all.
I don't really need the GPS built in, I carry a couple plain receivers
for that. Future expandability might be nice, though.
What I wonder, can I load the info from Delorme, or some other vendor,
onto a flash memory card and run the map program on a PDA?
Some of what I've read in this group leads me to believe that it can
be done.
Maybe it would just be better to get a navigation system, but again I
don't need something to tell me where to go, just a map to show me
where I've alreany got. Way cool would be the ability to have the
topomaps on cards as well.
Thanks for any advice.
