Re: which GPS allows USGS data import

Hello,
I'm a new GPS user, old GIS user and programmer. I'd like to find a
GPS which will allow me to create files from "outside" data such as USGS
DEM data and import it into the GPS rather than purchasing the data
provided/sold by the GPS maker. I've been looking at the Magellan
eXploris 500, Magellan Meridian, Garmin 60C, Garmin RINO 130 and Garmin
RINO 520 so far. As far as I can tell from what I've read, none of
these will allow data import other than from the manufacturers software
and data. Is this correct? Are there GPSs which will let me create and
import USGS data once I've put it in teh proper format? Any comments on
the GPSs that I've mentioned would be appreciated. My main uses would
be recording hikes and paddling trips, not very interested in using it
to navigate highways. If this has already been covered maybe someone
can point me to your FAQ.
Thanks for any info,
Eileen
