Jarod,
Sorry I didn't get back to this sooner. Since your last post I've only
had time for the couple of short exchanges with Meindert, until this
evening.

Ok, I didn't read your previous post that way. Well, as you can
probably tell from my previous response about the manual, you won't
get any argument from me about poor documentation of many features. On
the other hand, I think if your unit had updated the DST as it should
have, you probably wouldn't have had a problem with it being poorly
documented. I think you figured it out for yourself, but it just
didn't work correctly.

I suspect they're not recognizing the distinction between "course
up" and "track up". Maybe something's getting lost in the
translation. But maybe not; that's why I suggested asking them to
email you a screen capture showing the setting. That would remove any
doubt.

Interesting. I just tried it on my 76CS and that's *not* how this
one works. Maybe this is a difference (intentional or otherwise)
between the firmware of the 76 and the 96. If I press ENTER at the
point you describe to "save the setting" it just brings up the
pop-up again. I have to press PAGE or QUIT to exit the page, and the
setting is saved either way. Only difference is that QUIT takes me
back to the setup menu page, while PAGE takes me to one of my regular
display pages.

Not necessary. Remember my comment about Garmin manuals? ;-) I'll
take your word for it.

I may not have been completely clear on this myself. If you connect
the unit to the external power before turning it on, it will start with
the backlight at 50%, regardless of how you had it set previously.
(This may explain your observation: "Though as I said, I think I have
since turned it on a couple of times and it has the light on".) Once
the unit is running (still on external power) you can adjust the
backlight (including turning it off) by any of the methods you have
talked about and it will keep that setting until you turn it off (or
change it again). But if you turn it off, the next time you start it
on external power, the light will be on at 50% again. None of this has
any effect on the light when the unit is running on batteries. When
running on batteries, the default initial setting is "off". Of
course all of this is how my 76CS works and I don't know whether the
96 functions as similar to the 76 as its appearance seems to imply.
Bottom line is, I don't think the unit remembers the backlight
setting when you turn it off. And how it behaves when you turn it back
on depends on whether it is running on batteries or external power.

It isn't just you. It seems like problems with high-tech equipment
have an amazing ability to infuriate people.

I probably won't be piloting any aircraft again in the near future,
but thanks for the sentiment. And back at you, mate.
