If you have a flat dashboard, you wouldn't want to contour the metal
anyway -- but -- if you don't have any stiffening in the bag at all, then
I'm not sure how it could withstand even a slow stop without the unit
falling over. Even on a flat surface, the four metal extensions give the
whole assembly an extra degree of stability that I'm not sure how you
could do without -- particularly with a unit as heavy as the 2610.

As to the composition of your beanbag, I don't work for Garmin, so I
can't say what they've been changing over the years, but I've owned two
of them, and both had easily bendable metal 'plates' down each of the
four 'feet' which help a whole lot with stability.

Maybe call Garmin and see if they will replace it?
