Is it possible to load the better road maps onto the unit without
losing the marine POI information?

Not with the default way of working using Garmin's standard software.

If all the maps are in the same Mapsource application, I have experienced that I can combine maps of different types in the upload. E.g. City Select and local topographic maps (also Mapsource). I can't see why it shouldn't work just as well with one or more charts together with e.g. City Select. Only, how do they behave in the overlapping areas? Somebody did write something about that in this newsgroup a couple of years ago.

The above is normal for any product which is within Mapsource. I routinely use tiles from multiple "products", some Garmin and some home-brewed.

The problem is that the Marine POI file isn't part of Mapsource, and
its not obvious how one would move the Marine POI data file into
Mapsource.

(I had a quick try today before posting my earlier reply, and
inspite of being in possession of some third-party map
drawing/compiling tools, and the ability to write my own maps for
Mapsource, I couldn't get the Marine POI file into Mapsource. That's
not to say it cannot be done with a bit more work or knowledge.
The only way I could think it might work would be to use a
third-party map loader which doesn't erase the maps already present
in the GPS device. )

You may want to try reinstalling your the Marine POI data that was
originally on the GPS. You can get it here:

Not the problem, that's the easy bit - reinstalling the Marine POI file.

However, installing it alongside other data is more tricky.

Yes, I do not believe it is possible. However the data is duplicated in marine charts and even the topo maps. It may also be present in Garmins POI product so using one of these sources will provide the same or even better data along side of the map data. I believe Garmin's intent was just to provide some working information with the product as shipped. They intended that you replace it will more serious data by buying one of their products.
