I've found an annoying problem with the 2610 and would like to know of
any tricks around this.

The unit is supposed to be able to plot a route between a given point
a and point b. If point a is your home and point b is a given address
it should be simple, right?

It is if point b, the destination, is in any other state. Unit works
like a charm.

If point b is in the same town as point a, or a nearby town, same
thing.

The problem is if you're setting out to another part of the same
state.

You put in the address and it only gives you similar named street
options near the point of origin. If there are none, it says "none
found"

Example: Setting out from Philadelphia to an address on Franklin
Street in Pittsburgh. Putting in the address on Franklin Street where
you can only specify state, number and street, the unit offers up
addresses in towns all near Philadelphia and nothing for the
Pittsburgh area (or Harrisburg or Erie for that matter)

Unlike the poi's I can't figure out how to tell the unit "near here"
or "near other."

The only thing I have been able to do is have the unit direct me to
the destination city and when close, pull into a rest stop or any
parking lot and re-ask for the address of point b. Naturally, the
unit then offers it up.

If this is the only solution, it is an inconvenient design flaw. Also
potentially dangerous, as I have not always found a safe place to pull
over.

Has anybody found any other ways around this.

David,

I think I see what's happening. You haven't identified a design flaw in the 2610, only operator error <VBG>. Starting from an address in Philadelphia, the FIND/ADDRESS dialog box has "Pennsylvania" in the "Limit to" section. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this is the reason you state that you can only specify state, number and street. However, if you select "Limit to," you'll see other options, including "Enter a City in Pennsylvania." If you select this option and enter Pittsburgh, you'll be able to find the address on Franklin St. you're looking for.

Hope this helps.

Dave

Excuse me, but before I decided to post I went over the instruction
manual and went through every menu on the unit!

If such an option existed I would have found it from the start.

On the address screen, the Limit to does say "Pennsylvania" at the
start.

Touching it gives three options:

1) <No Limits> - how does expanding the search parameter help in this
situation?

2) Pennsylvania - where we begin

3) Select State/Province - this is what I have been using when driving
out of state without a problem

Once again, when finding an address in state, the unit restricts you
to the region of the state you are in and does not seem to offer a
means to find things in other regions.

Now, how is this operator error and not a design flaw?

David,

I hope you understand that my comment about operator error was meant as a joke. <VBG> means Very Big Grin.

If you just start up your 2610, do a Find/Address and press "Limit to," here's what you should see according to page 21 of the 2610 manual: "Thus, to narrow your search, particularly if you are trying to locate a street of intersection in another city or state/province, touch the Limit to box and select one of the Limit to options: No Limit, Enter a City, Enter a State/Province, or Enter a Postal Code." The question is why you aren't seeing all these options.

Perhaps you're only paraphrasing, but I don't remember ever seeing an option of "Select State/Province." Is that the exact language you see? Perhaps it would help us if you could tell us step-by-step what you're doing when you use the Find/Address function. Are you in the middle of creating a new route? Are you just looking for an address from your current location with the goal of doing a "go to" to that address?

Also, what firmware and city navigator versions are you using? Maybe differnt versions account for the differences between what you see when you select "Limit to" and what I and others see. Please let us know.

Happy New Year.

Dave
