This question has been up already. The Garmin 276C has two NMEA ports, one
can be used with a Garmin sounder if it has NMEA output. garmin recommends
the electronics box GSD20 but that is not necessary. In a thread on a
swedish forum the use of the 276C with a Fishfinder 160 is described and the
aim is to chart the depths of a lake, just like in your case. Seems to have
worked really well. Soundings are saved in tthe track log.
Garmin: The 276C will record depth in the track log, and it can output the
DPT NMEA string
- so you could save your data on a (handheld) computer directly if you don't
want to rely on the track log.
Another tip from that thread which of course is in Swedish: Have a look at
OziSounder. It reads DPT out of NMEA and brings it into Ozi.
Actually, reading further there was some confusion as to whether depth data
was saved in Waypoints or in track points, so the question was put to Gamin
UK further clarification with this answer:
"Running on Software version 3.10 on the GPSMAP276C, you do get depth data
associated with the track properties of track points when you export track
points to Mapsource, you get temperature as well"
Bottom line: You don't need a fancy sounder system and there are probably
other models than the Fishfinder 160 which would work.
I could try to bring you in contact with the person who has the system up
and running. If you wish, contact me at jonas punkt lonnroth at skynet punkt
