But I don't know how to control the tour.
http://www.amgentourofcalifornia.com/Route/map/stage2map.html
has a link for "Google Earth Route" near the top of the map.
That opens Google Earth, and I can play the tour from Martinez to San Jose.
I'm interested primarily in the area around Calaveras and Sierra Road.
Afraid I can't be of much help since I've had some of the same trouble
when viewing my own bike ride tracklogs in Google Earth. The .kml file
is just text so you could check the lat/long of where you want the
playback to start and create a new file that just includes the desired
part of the tracklog.
I'd also like to be able to control the viewing angle and height of the
touring mode. I can do that for waypoints, but it reverts back to its
own defaults once it starts following the tracklog. Along Calaveras
it'd be nice to zoom out a bit more to show the reservoir and when
climbing Sierra a shallower viewing angle would show the hill more
clearly.
