There are some GPS receivers or softwares
that will let you plan and save a route without a fix or in an "off
line" mode and some that won't.
Yes the navman units are like that, not a big deal, my house has lots
of windows... ;)
Logical routing would seem to have you staying farther West on I-81
anyway. If it wants to get you over to I-95 too far North it is an
invitation to disaster. I'd hold off on moving back over towards the
coast until I-64 or, even better, I-77. That spectacular run down
towards Winston-Salem and Raleigh has to be seen to be appreciated.
81 to 77 south of Roaenoke, 77 to 26 south of Columnbia SC and 26 to 95
just north of the GA boarder. Much prettier then 95 and less traffic
(less state troupers too I think).
Oddly enough when I first did it a few years ago the AAA routing
software took me off 81 at Wilkes-Barre and onto the PA turnpike for
5-10 miles both north and southbound. This year it only wanted to do
it northbound (navteq data). It didn't look any shorter and as the
speed limit on the turnpike was lower it wouldn't have been any faster
(I did as I was told the first time but not this year).
