ahhh, that was it.
changed the connection type back to Serial port, confirmed/selected the
proper COM port (as shown in Device manager) and viola!! ...it works now!

When the serial to USB converter is PNP'd by the system, it creates a
virtual COM port for it. So your application needs to connect with that
COM port, it is not connecting with a USB port.
