Sounds like it's working as designed; you just don't agree with the
design decision.

OK, once again and then I'll shut up:

For all kinds of waypoints (e.g. Lodging, Fuel, Hospital etc etc) 'Hide
Above = Auto' means that the unit chooses to hide the waypoint if you zoom
out sufficiently. The level at which this happens is determined
automatically by the software.

But for a particular type of waypoint (i.e. User Waypoint), does it make
sense for 'Hide Above = Auto' to mean 'Never hide' ?

Map objects (lodging, roads, etc.) are assigned to zoom levels when the "map" is created to give an easy criterion for the receiver to decide when to hide or not. User waypoints don’t have this attribute and most users probably wouldn’t bother setting it if a waypoint had a zoom level. So "better user waypoint display" isn’t a high priority – development time and program code space is going into more important issues.

Since user waypoints don’t have a zoom level attribute, some algorithm would need to be built into the receiver to decide when to hide a given waypoint. For instance the receiver could decide to hide point A if it is within x distance of point B. This will anger some users because they would want it to hide point B instead of point A.

For instance on the B&W 76 series receivers, the text of a user waypoint is hidden (the icon may or may not be visible depending on other objects) if it will interfere with displaying the text of an adjacent user waypoint. I find that it tends to hide the waypoint closest to me, which is the one I’m usually most interested in, and show the one slightly farther away. I’d rather have it the other way around.

The clutter doesn’t particularly bother me. I just zoom in and out as needed. I’d rather see what’s there than have the receiver hide the waypoint that is most important to me. The “Highway Page” hides the user waypoints that I want to see.
