Ok, so my (poor) assumption that the grid I am using is perfectly

When you get it right, maybe you should tell Microsoft.
If I fetch an image from terraserver using their interface, for the
coordinates of my house, it is off by a couple of miles. If I fetch those
same coordinates via ExpertGPS, which uses Terraserver, it is in the right
place. Or Google Earth, or MS S&T. Their interface obviously has an
error in it.
