Re: ? Garmin GPSMAP 60Cx versus 60CSx

For me the advantage of the compass is that your map on csx model will
rotate with your movement and always will point in direction you are facing
regardless if you are moving or not. This is very important in thick bush
where you cant move fast. And idea of caring gps in one hand and the compass
in other is not practical.I keep compass in my pocket with topo map in case
gps fails.

Skimming through the threads, I get theimpression that it's not worth
the $30+ price difference to get the S version unless you do a lot of
hiking. For routine car travel it's not necessary if you already have a
magnetic or electronic compass with you?

For "routine car travel" the 60* series might not be the best choice
anyway; it has no voice output and the display is a tad small. It's a
compromise.

Staying with car travel, you're right: the compass is useless in that
function as it doesn't work when the unit is mounted vertically. That
said, I find it really helpful when hiking/walking/biking, and for $30 I
wouldn't think long about it.

I faced a similar dilemma in buying my first GPS: Legend Cx or Vista Cx. I
went for the Vista and do not regret it one bit. I also have a fine analog
compass, but the Vista has everything built in. For me, the altimeter is
simply bragging rights, but it is nice to know how high you've climbed.
Bottom line: for $30, go for it and get the 60CSX. That way you will never
wonder if you should have bought the better one.
