You need to set the GPS to off road routing if you want to navigate aNo you don't, as I have found. I had originally tried using MetroGuide
route loaded into the unit.
V5 to construct routes (on roads). Those maps do not carry routing
information for automatic routing within the 530. The 530 goes into
route calculation mode as soon as you specify a route; Garmin tech
support tells me that this feature is to allow the unit to navigate the
user to the starting point of the route. Since the MetroGuide maps don't
support this, the unit resorts to using the built-in "Basemap" and
that's what had me hopping on and off interstates. When I used the City
Navigator maps (with routing data), it still did the initial routing
calculation, but wound up following the route I had loaded. My beef with
these maps is that the segments are huge (unlike MetroGuide's). Maps
that would cover my route from upstate NY to southern NJ include one
segment that covers all of NY City and Long Island, even though my
proposed route never traverses those areas, just the Newark NJ area. The
combined size of those map segments exceeds the 56MB capacity of the
530.
