1. I assume the Mapsource CD allows me to mark an area and load the
map of that area into the GPS unit -- right??

The program has that capability.

2. Can I load a complete 7.5-minute 1:24,000 quad into 8MB??? Or,
can I load more than one 7.5 minute quad?

You may be able to get an idea from this:

In the western set, the largest quad is Shiva Temple in the Grand Canyon
at
910 KB, which has an enormous amount of contour lines. The smallest is
Queets West in Olympic National Park at 3 KB, which is mostly ocean. The
average is about 225 KB.

As many as the GPSMap 76 will hold can be loaded.

Okay -- thanks to Phil and Someone.

I picked up the Garmin GPSMAP 76 color, etc., today -- dealer did not
have the maps I wanted so guess I'll get them from an online dealer. I
need to Eastern US national parks -- actually, I need only the Great
Smokies and surrounding area.

Which model did you get? The GPSMAP 76 has 8Meg memory and a grey-scale
screen. The GPSMAP 76C has a color screen and 115 meg memory .. based on
info here:

Is there now a version with 8 meg memory and color?

Phil

Well - - - I gotta admit -- I went to our local Bass Pro Shop (I live in
Knoxville, TN -- BPS opened a new store 14 miles up the interstate from
me -- deadly for my wallet) -- I had to get a new sleeping bag and checked
out the GPS units while I was there.

I went crazy and got the GPSMAP 76Cx -- color, uses the microSD cards --
comes with a 128MB card installed and a USB cable.

The unit is a handful -- I am currently using an eTrex Legend -- the 76 is
quite a bit larger but no heavier. I played with it for an hour this
afternoon -- its acquisition time is very rapid and as I drove it followed
and updated almost instantly.

I really appreciate the big display -- easy on my 61-year-old eyes -- and
the big buttons are a lot easier than the tiny buttons and joystick on the
eTrex. The color display is easy to read

I am a volunteer with an organization that is working on a 10-year-long
project to count every species in the Smokies -- plant, animal, lichen,
fungus, slime mold - you name it. We are using GPS for locating data which
is why I want to be able to load 1:24,000 maps into the unit -- I may be
able to get the entire park on one microSD card.

This unit was a lot of money -- more than I planned to spend -- but my
insurance company was generous to me after Katrina so I figured one toy
wouldn't hurt. :-)

By the way, I'm not certain what the x in 76Cx stands for. I plan to have a
few sips of Wild Turkey tonight and study the manual.
