Hi All,

I posted on here a couple of days ago about the reduced number of tiles
in City Navigator Europe v8 compared to City Select Europe v6. This
problem is making me consider buying a 60CSx to replace my 60CS, but
I'm concerned...

I own a 60CS and a 296 aviation receiver, and I want to be able to
upload maps to both, as I should be allowed to do. I have never
uploaded maps to the 296 (I'm still waiting for the datacard to
arrive...), but the 60CS is registered as the handheld which was
unlocked for CS6.
...
I've looked on the Garmin unlock page for my account, and it tells me
that CN8 is unlocked for my 60CS. So, presuming I upload maps from CN8
to my 296, that is both unlocks used. If I buy a 60CSx, which I am only
considering because CN8 has the larger map tiles, I will presumably
have to buy *another* handset unlock from Garmin. Is that correct?

Yes, I believe your analysis is correct and that you have a legitimate
complaint given the increase in the tile size - especially since there
is no way to determine the actual memory size of each map tile from the
Garmin website or other literature.

Clearly Garmin has the ability to reassign your unlock code from your
current 60CS to a new 60CSx since they do similar reassignments
routinely when replacing broken units or for customers who have had
their units stolen. So the key is to get someone at Garmin to see that
this is a case that deserves such a reassignment. I've had much better
luck communicating with Garmin's tech support by telephone call rather
than emails and would suggest calling them, explaining the situation,
and asking to speak directly to a supervisor it the initial contact
says there's nothing they can do. Calling them right around their
opening time seems to work best for me, but I deal with the folks in
Kansas so it may not apply to the UK.

Hello. I just called Garmin the other day with a similar issue. I have
North American City Select, V6 (upgraded from 5), on two computers, ergo,
I've PAID for two NACS installations.

I recently sold my GPSmap 76CS and Vista C, which were the two units
registered for NACS-v5/6. I purchased the new GPSmap 76CSx to replace
them. My problem is that Garmin won't reassign my NACS registration to
my new unit, instead stating that I'll have to purchase a new unlock code.

*Sigh*

Is anyone else getting this type of thing? I'm tired of having to
"re-buy" every time I buy new hardware from Garmin. City Navigator 8.0 is
coming out this summer, so I do not want to buy anything until it is
released.

I'm told buy Garmin tech support--via email and phone--that every time an
unlock code is generated, that Garmin has to pay NAVTEQ (or any other
partnered vendor of proprietary map data) a fee for each unlock code.

*Thoughtful Pause for Consideration*

Why does it sound, to me, like I'm being snowed?

Looking forward to replies.

Warm regards,
Stephen
