prevents abuse. With the current lock codes there's no need to connect
to Garmin's website once you have a code that's valid for your
particular GPS serial number. So there'd be no way to prevent someone
from continuing to load maps onto the old GPS even after the code has
been 'revoked.' About the only method I could see would require you to
send the old GPS to Garmin and they could change or replace the serial
number and send it back.
I disagree, peter.
To think that a company should have absolute control over their product to
the point of essentially forcing their customers to purchase new unlock
codes--vaporware, really, as in<garmin>-house key generators don't
necessarily have to be connected to NAVTEQ's servers to work, as in the
case of a unit needing repair--when they already have what should be
useable maps on their hard drives, is ludicrous.
The case of a unit needing repair is different since the unit with the
old code is then in Garmin's possession and they can assure that it
won't be reloaded with maps using that code. But when you sold your
previous receivers Garmin has no way to be sure that the new buyers
didn't also get the software and could continue to load maps into those
units using the older unlock codes. Neither the software nor the
receivers could possibly know that those codes are no longer valid.
The simple solution would be to just re-allocate the licenses to new units
as they are purchase.
Exactly what is your "simple solution" and how does it assure NavTeq
that the map software won't be used on both the old units and the newly
purchased ones?
As I said above, the only way I see is to ship the old receivers back
to Garmin and have them modified with new serial numbers. But that's
neither cheap nor convenient.
All this can be done in software (MapSource) with no need to be in contact with Garmin.
The maximum of two unlock codes is already handled by MapSource, so why shouldn't it be possible to revoke one of the codes through MapSource?
If you were forced to connect the GPS you want to revoke the unlock code from, then it would be possible to remove the maps from the GPS, just as the new GPS has to be connected when you want to download maps into it.
