You have failed to grasp the fact that the mapsource product can be installed on an infinite number of PCs, none of which need to be connected to Garmin in order to download to the GPS handset, and all of which are capable of being backed up and restored to some previous state where the old unlock key was still valid.
Please do not insult my intelligence. I did not "fail to grasp" anything. It's irrelevant that the software can be installed on multiple PCs. If I sold my PC to someone else but left the software intact then then could still use Mapsource maps but not download them to their own GPS. Of course selling my PC with the software and keeping a copy for myself would be illegal anyway.
The key has to be matched to the GPS. The "old key" could easily be held in the GPS (as well at Garmin) and be marked as disabled. If you tried to use the same key again then it would not be allowed to download maps. The only way you would be able to get it to work if you somehow figured out how to defeat the disabled key but that would require that you hack the GPS which I am sure is being done now anyway and is illegal.
The disable key process could also disable the key on your PC too, just to make things balanced. Of course if you hacked your registry or restored it, you could get the old code to work but you would still not be able to use it to download to any GPS. And hacking the registry would be illegal just as it is with any similar methods to defeat copy protection methods.
I insure my GPS. I insure it for the cost of the hardware, and ythe unlocked maps that I'd lose.
Good for you.
They have a solution, you just don't like it. Fair enough - buy elsewhere.
Just because their is a solution does not mean it's a fair solution. If Garmin had some real competition without similar practices then people would be buying elsewhere and Garmin and NavTeq would change their practice. Until that happens your suggestion is totally worthless. The fact is that if we want their product then we have to live with their polices, it does not mean we have to like it.
