Re: GPS for in-vehicle 4x4

I find the garmin topo maps are only good about 75% of the time. Often
the roads are very different from the Garmin maps. I will say that once
the garmin topo map base in my emap did save me from one nasty rain
storm in the desert. I could see the cell moving around and rerouted
(manually of course on an emap) to avoid hell and damnation, not to
mention lightning hits to the ground.

Generally what I do for dirt roads that I never traveled is to prepare
a route in mapsource, but record a trail when I'm there. Then I can
correct the route with the trail for use on the next trip.

I've run into situations where you see one road on the Garmin database,
but there are multiple roads when you are on-scene. [The Moapa Indian
reservation is a classic for this.] You really need to use something
like Expertgps to "see" all the roads. This is where the laptop on the
car seat comes in handy.

I'm not sure this would be a solution, but you could get one of those
smaller notebook computers, perhaps like a Sony TX series, and just put
it on the dash. Galls has notebook mounting hardware.

I'm having a hard time finding a good GPS for mounting in a 4x4 for
off-road use. I'd like a large screen and the ability to load topo
basemaps. Garmin has the Quest, but the screen is tiny for a vehicle
situation. Can anyone recommend something a little more appropriate?
Ideally I'd like a 4"+ sized screen since I have room for it. I've
checked Garmin and Magellan, not sure who to try next.
