I spoke to the Magellan rep at CES two years ago and my recollection of
the conversation was the magellan maps are 100k, but interpolated to
40k.
The lack of decent topo maps is what keeps me from upgrading from my
emap.

I've noticed a lot of nice color screen GPS systems for routing people
around cities but need one to go on the handlebars of my dirtbike. I need
backwoods roads and topographic coverage. I would like shaded relief topo
display. I can power the unit of 12 volts from the dirtbike. Do any
manufacturers make such a unit?
For on a dirt bike a Garmin 60Cx with the optional MapSource U.S. Topo
mapping package would give you 1:100,000 detail. They also have a U.S.
Topo 24K package that provides selective mapping data from some parks
and some areas.
Details on the mapping packages here:
http://www.garmin.com/cartography/ontheTrail/
and on the various handheld GPS receivers here:
http://www.garmin.com/mobile/products.html#handheld
I would consider the 60Cx to be about the minimum package, there are
some other models there with more bells and whistles.
If you're looking for older and cheaper, look at the Magellan Meridian
models and the optional MapSend Topo 3D mapping package. Topo 3D has
full U.S. topo coverage at about 1:40,000.
For either of those units you'll need the accessory voltage dropping DC
adapter and you can get those as either plug in or wire in models.
The handle bar mounts offered by Garmin and Magellan are generally
considered okay but inferior to some of the after market mounts like Ram
Mounts.
