There was an interesting commentary on CBS-TV last night, with theThe problems seem to be the quality of the base digital mapping, which is
reporter being from the UK.
Gist was that GPS can result in some very strange routes over there
(no mention of model/brand). He cited two examples: One which took
the driver on a route requiring fording of a river; and the other
involving climbing "a mountain". In both cases there were warning
signs saying not to drive the road involved.
Since I've read reports here of similar routing problems, it was
interesting to hear. So far I've been unable to find a transcript on
line; perhaps it is too early.
probably common to a lot of different problems.
I have played with various satnav products and 'mistakes' don't seem to be
hard to find, both tomtom and via michelin both have the same 'bogus'
roundabout close to me, via michelin has a major road marked as a no go, it
is surrounded by roads which are no go, so probably the digitiser got
confused. Mapoplois tried to send me down a private road, what us 'ramblers'
call a white road.
Considering that we have some of the best mapping in the world, what I have
seen can only be put down to a failure to interpret the maps correctly.
On via michelin you notice many field tracks shown, which clearly shouldn't be
shown on a vehicle navigation system.
