Apparently there is a SIRF chipset firmware update from 2.4 to 2.5
available, but only if you use Garmin's Web-Updater - I can't find any
place to download this from on Garmin's website.

I upgraded my GPSMap 76CSx manually to firmware version 2.70, and then
downloaded and installed the WebUpdater after reading about the SIRF
update here. Worked as described - the web updater stated that my GPS
firmware was up to date but offered to check for "additional updates",
and then updated the SIRF firmware.

I just searched my C: drive for .RGN files and found one called
"Update.RGN" that has a plausible timestamp. 444868 bytes in size,
found in c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local
Settings\Temp\Garmin Software Updates\.

"Update.RGN" is probably a generic file name used for each download by
WebUpdater.

I had not used web updater previously, but it seems a smartly crafted
piece of software. As it uses standard protocols, its communication
with the Garmin server can be inspected using HTTP debugging tools
like Fiddler (www.fiddlertool.com). I found out that the server name
of the file being downloaded seems to be "SiRFGPS_250.rgn", which
confirms the theory.

The XML response file from the server also lists an "AdditionalInfo"
URL: http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1451

This page indicates that the 2.50 update seems available since April
6, and also states that "WebUpdater is required to install this file".

There's no change list given though.

Maybe running UPDATER.EXE in the presence of SiRFGPS_250.rgn (aka
Update.RGN) will perform the update, but I don't want to mess up my
shiny new 76CSx ...

Gilles.
