of intelligence to the device. It is now possible to install programs to USB
Flash Drives and the Launchpad acts as a one-click gateway to the installed
applications or software portals."
Here's a little more about the technology http://www.everythingusb.com/u3.html
However, an ordinary flash drive should run some applications. If the
application can run straight from its exe file without needing to use the
registry then it can run on a flash drive. Portable Filezilla can do this as it
leave no footprint in the registry. Feedreader 3.0 give you an option when
installing asking if you intend running it from a Flash Drive and if you do it
places all its files and folders within its program Folder. The uploading
application for sending photos to Flickr photo share site has been found to be
able to be run from a flash drive. I'm looking for a stand alone application
for up/downloading GPS data and have just over six weeks to find one.

actually run ON the USB drive. Rather by making the USB drive look
like a CDROM (rather than a normal flash drive), CD auto-launch
entices the PC to launch a program resident on the USB drive and gives
you all of these wonderful features. Yes the data is resident on the
USB drive. It requires windows OS on the PC. Not too many GPSr's with
windows running on them!
I'd be surprised if a flash drive could act as a USB "host" and connect
to a GPS to retrieve data. Being a USB "host" is non-trivial. Being a
"client" isn't quite so hard. In addition without a UI on the device,
you'd have to script everything you wanted it to do: watch for USB
flash drive, copy a file across with a name you have to discover. And
of course what OS would be running on the drive?
Since this is usenet please feel free to contradict me. I'd love to
hear of such a device.
