the 76CSx is a good unit.
it survived 1/2 hour in the tub with my kids (yes it does float).
the 76csx fast at everything compared to a V, EXCEPT
lock while moving. my V is faster at lock while moving (ie in my
truck going out to the main road the V beat the 76csx). it wasn't a side by side test but both units cold the V would lock before the main road and the 76CSx didn't. personally this is no big deal as i know where i am when i start or i can wait a little for lock.
it is does work with way old city select (what ever version
came with the original V), but i had problems with the unlocking.
i had a 1 region unlock and a whole map unlock, for some reason
the 76csx and mapsource only wanted me to use the original 1 region
unlock. 2 days of email to garmin and a new unlock code means it works.
personally i expected garmin to tell me the city select (ver 2 or 4 i think) was no longer supported, but NOOOOOO they just fixed it.
limit of 2030ish map segments (yes i hit it easy)
firmware 2.70 doesn't work with a 1 gig card in the 76csx attached to
the host computer (win 98) via usb (it does everything in mapsource,
transfers it, and the maps never show up)
firmware 2.71 beta does work with a 1 gig card (all 500+ meg of the usa on one card).
I like the ability to order the pages that you can view BUT wish
you could have multiple map (or any other page) pages with different configs, ie map1=just map, map2=map 2 data, map3=map 2 different data.
lowrance did a very good job of this with the gm100
speaking of lowrance: I WANT MY RANGE CIRCLES. basically they are circles that are some pre-set distance from you. i love them for long distance touring across states with long distances of nothing.
the 76CSx could use some of the V's features (like show data in map page only when navigating). Some of the new locations for commands are just wierd. And finally why the hell have a 'find' page (that you have to cycle to) when hitting the find button brings up all the same info faster?
would i send it back for a 100% refund? no i like it. its fast and it uses external memory (which i REALLY need for my next trip, as i will be buying a new map in budapest and having it installed there on a blank chip, and it will not affect my metroguide europe install on the 1 gig chip)
this is my second gps purchase from tvnav.com. i asked questions, i ordered it, they shipped it. my questions where answered, my order was recieved, I AM NOT sending it back. So for those that have had problems with www.tvnav.com i can't replicate them. for those that have had probelms with garmin; they might be a bit slow (personally not really unless you have a 1k a month maintance contract), but they FIXED my problems (except range circles which is more of a want then a problem).
