Re: Best GPS unit for track logging?

I currently use a Magellan 330, primarily for recording tracks (hiking
and driving) that I later transfer to maps and/or produce elevation
profiles. I'm looking to replace the unit with one that will:
* offer better battery life
* allow an external antenna
* record more than 2,000 track points
* record horizontal position, altitude and time (as my Magellan 330
does)

I've read good reviews on the Garmin 60C and 76C units, but not many
words on track logging. I have some questions:
* what is the minimum distance between track points that can be
specified?
* is altitude recorded in the track log?
* I read that "saved" track logs lose their timestamps.... true?
* can the track logs be saved to the SD card (on the "x" units)?

Either the 60C or 76C should work since they can record 10K points in
the active log. A better fit would be the newer models: the 60CX or
76CX. With the current beta software and a memory
card, you can record tracks for a long time. (I have a $29 512 Meg
card with about a hundred meg of maps but figure I can log points
every second for the next 38 days...24x7) By the way with the new sirf
3 chipset, the 60cx/76cx need for an external antenna drops a lot.

All four units record lat/lon/time/alt. You can record track
points every second or every 10 meters of motion. They work with
external antennas. I just did a battery test on my 60CX and with
alkaline AA batteries it went 19 hours. With battery saver on, it went
28.5 hours. (Of course with batter saver on I only got a point every 5
seconds.)
