OTOH and IIRC, the official Garmin serial cable for the 76CX is more

The pfranc serial cable is an aftermarket solution favored by many.
You can buy the Garmin-compatible connectors for $7 to solder on to an
surplus "mouse" cable.
You can buy completed pfranc cables in various configurations.
http://www.pfranc.com/cables/index.mhtml pD32 $14.98 being one of them.
There is also the combination of wanting serial output from the Garmin 76
to get NMEA, but to a PC that has no serial ports, using the pfranc USB
adapter.
I tried the demo of GPSGate. It was versatile, and might allow for some
interesting applications via the real time translation of a GPS NMEA stream
across the internet, but if all you want is a serial cable, a serial cable
is probably the right answer.
