Sometimes you have to run the driver install before plugging in the
adapter. If you did not do it that way, you might try uninstalling the
drivers and reinstalling them without plugging the adapter in. Also, if
you see any yellow question marked unknown devices from failed install
in the Device Manager, remove those and do a restart.
You need to do the uninstall while the cable is attached, remove the cable,
reboot, do a driver installation from disk, and then plug in the cable.
Otherwise the device becomes hidden, and it's harder to find, to delete it.
From a WinXP cmd prompt, you canset devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
start devmgmt.msc
In device manager, view-check "show hidden devices".
Delete everyhting that is gray that you don't like ;-)
A friend just went through this a couple of days ago. He had an eTrex and
a laptop with no serial port. He bought some nameless cable and it worked
okay. Then he bought a new laptop, and the cable doesn't work... he bought
a Belkin cable, and it worked. He doesn't know what the answer is to that
one. The old laptop is gone, so he can't tell if he has a hardware failure
in the cable, or some incompatibility.
The pfranc USB-serial adapter driver is preloaded in WinXP.
