I did update the GPS engine firmware in June, using the Webupdater in rerun mode, but still saw these problems, then as of early July I've seen it work.
I.e. afaik the problems seems to be at least somewhat unrelated to that firmware fix?

This is just an argument about semantics: When I wrote 'firmware vs software' I meant the SirfSTAR firmware, which is indeed shown on the sw version screen as:
Software Version
2.90
GPS SW Version
2.60
I.e. both parts are software, but the one I called firmware is closer to the actual GPS hardware. :-)
Anyway, the important part is that it now works!
