I just d/l'd nRoute and installed it, and I'm trying to get the
position data to show in nRoute.

I'm connected with the supplied usb cable.

I get my gps model and serial number displayed, but nRoute will not
move past the "searching for satellites" status, although the gps
itself is giving a good position. No data is shown in the status
page.

Is nRoute looking for COM ports? If so, the 76CSx does not create a
virtual COM port.

Garmin has a utility intended for use with the GPS 18 called Spanner
that will create a virtual COM port, you can download it from here:

https://www.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=1627

Over on newsgroup alt.satellite.gps.garmin there was some recent
discussion of using Spanner successfully to get NMEA data to another
application from from a 76CSx. The topic of the thread was "eTrex Vixta
cx as Input for Laptop Mapping Software".

Basically, you install Spanner and, with the 76CSx connected via USB and
the serial output of the GPS set to NMEA in/NMEA out mode, it worked to
get NMEA data to an application on a system running XP.

I tried using Spanner on a system running Windows 2000 Pro SP4 and it
did not work.

Another option that might work for you is the Franson gpsgate utility:

http://www.franson.com/gpsgate/

The gpsgate utility takes the Garmin proprietary sentences, converts
them to normal NMEA sentences, and output them via a virtual COM port.

Jack,

"I've been told . . ." that the nRoute program is supposed to work
with the usb port. It will get some data each time you turn the gps
on, then off then on again, but the gps does not send continuous data
to the pc.

I think nRoute just hasn't yet been updated/corrected to work properly
with the 76 CSx. I think I'll email Garmin on Monday about it.
