Now, about colour displays: Today while on my bike, I look at my mobile
phone which has colour TFT display. With polarizing sunglasses and very
bright sunshine, it wasn't THAT readable. Would this nehave the same on
TFT colour displays ?
(Yes, in shade, the TFT backlight is great and will provide a bright
background, but not in direct sunlight).
What happens when you rotate the GPS 90 degrees? On some displays the polarization in your sunglasses is the issue.
Wel,, once you move, the GPS can give you a compass equivalent. But when
iddle, having true compass can be of use when looking for something.
(orient yourself before you start walking for instance).
If I need a compass in the woods I carry one.
For marine use I usually have anywhere from 2 to 5 different sources to look at for heading, bearing, course, track or whatever each device wants to call it, and I also will have one or two analog compasses to look at. Seldom are any of them in agreement with each other on the number displayed at any moment in time.
once in motion, one of the things I like about using the GPS derived heading is the general stability of the number displayed and the way it will respond to subtle steering changes without being affected by a lot extraneous movements and motions. It gives me a good stable number for determining what direction I am headed. And to date it has always gotten to where I wanted to go as well as the others.
