Addendum:

The main problem with GPS, for years, was that it did not provide a
sufficiently accurate vertical (elevation) resolution for landing. No
problem with horizontal resolution.

I don't recall how they addressed the vertical component.

LAAS or some custom correction scheme, perhaps?
