Only a guess, but I wonder if you need some sort of null modem adapter (a device which will cross connect certain lines)?
Some of the newer Garmin units use the same style of serial cable for RS-232 (e.g., the 60Cx). So the age of your 12XL should not prevent you from finding a suitable cable.
