When I want a line to follow on my GPS map display, I use the "route"
function which is available in most (if not all) Garmin consumer GPS
receivers. You can create the routes with the receiver itself and save
them on your personal computer using garmin's mapsource software or you
can make the routes on the PC at home before your flight and then download
them into the receiver.
I also recall an old garmin feature called "track back" that will analyze
the actual path you flew and create a route that follows that path. I'm
not sure which receivers have that capability today.
The folks at www.tvnav.com can help you pick a receiver just right for
you. I recommend that you get the largest screen you can afford.
It might be just because I'm getting old but I don't like squinting at
those itty bitsy GPS screens anymore.
