Garmin protocol: Packet ID 1 byte ?

The documentation mentions that the Packet ID sor serial communications
is 1 byte, the second byte of the packet, after the ox10.

It also shows that for USB communications, the Packet ID is two bytes,
the first 2 of the USB packet.

However, in the list of packet IDs, the current SDK document now
includes many which are above 255, (a bunch in the 990 and another bunch
in the 1060 ranges).

Are there situations where secial communications would have 2 byte
Packet IDs, or are those codes simply unavailable to software that uses
serial comms to make transfers ?
