Re: DEM-like maps using TYP customisation (GARMIN)

Hello Stan and others,

Greg proposes to convert existing elevation polylines into elevation
polygons by closing them. In this case all higher polygons would overlap
lower polygons. Naturally, Greg needs to use all eight polygon drawing
priority levels. That's not nice, because it makes difficult to use other
types of polygons (wegetagion, manmade features, etc.). It would be better
to generate non-intersecting elevation polygons. This would let place all of
them at single first polygon drawing priority level, leaving remaining seven
levels for other generic polygon types. Of course, other polygons' patterns
may need to be cahnged to make them "transparent" (dithered) to not to hide
underlaying elevation polygons.

It is possible to use Global Mapper to generate non-intersecting polygons
from NASA SRTM .hgt files. Unfortunatelly, version 7 does not write Polish
..mp format: some intermediate format and additional converion procedure
should be used. Maybe, it will be possible to save polygons in ESRI
Shapefile format and use cGPSmapper Personal verion or higher, or to use
registered version of GPSMapEdit to convert Shapefiles to .mp. Global Mapper
v. 8 is going to support direct writing of Polish .mp format.

Or, in other way, it looks to be possible to use GPSMapEdit with Michael
Sotin's Addons (http://michus.h12.ru/en/projects/addons.html) to subtract
higher polygons from lower polygons. By the way, it could also generate
contour lines from NASA SRTM .hgt files.

Olexa Riznyk

Subject: DEM-like maps using TYP customisation (GARMIN)

Hello,

Just recently I did make available on my site ( http://cgpsmapper.com )
very interesting article written by Greg Riker on how to create
DEM-like maps which are not only visible in MapSource but also in GPS.

Worth of reading....

Stan
