I'm surprised at how many don't like MapSource Topo. I use it as my only
mapping software in my pair of Rinos and do a lot of hiking--on and off
trail--in the Great Smoky Mountains and find it not just acceptable, but
very good. Remember, it's 1:100,000 scale!
Remember? That's the problem. ;-) You need to plan routes using better
software. I like expertgps because it can access both the usgs topo
maps and b&w imagery. Often roads are visible on the images that are
not on the topo.
I have to wonder what Garmin is thinking. If topo were offered in 24k,
then there would be an incentive to get one of those new GPSs with sd
cards.
I use Maptech's Terrain Navigator
for my computer mapping with USGS quads and always print out a topo map to
carry with me. When I compare the two, I never cease to be amazed at how
well the 1:100,000 maps actually agree with the USGS 1:24,000. It has served
me well enough that I've never seen the reason to purchase the parks
version. I must admit that I'm first a paper map kinda guy.

Hello all,
Is there another software program similar to Mapsource Topo US that
will work on GPSMap 60? (I live in Utah)
Does anyone know if Garmin plans to update their Mapsource Topo
software? It is over a decade old and they want to charge over $100
for this outdated software!
Thank you for replying.
I believe it is possible to buy just one CD of mapsource topo. That is,
you would want the western region.
I agree Mapsource topo is crap. Depending on your needs, expertgps
might be to your liking. There is an eval version, though I forget the
limitations.
One reason I don't bother to upgrade from my emap is I can fit plenty
of those crappy Garmin low res topos in 16Mbytes.
