Re: 12-volt car adapter question

If you are going to replace the plug, go to a good boat supply place and get
a Marinco brand. They are A LOT better than the autoparts store junk.
And yes, they have fuse.

Hi Clarence,

The plastic top of Garmin's adapter ("male" end) that slides into the
12V car receptacle broke off...so no power is being transferred to the
GPS unit. I'll just have to buy another cable. was thinking that
maybe I could rig something up, but its just not worth the risk to the
more expensive GPS unit.

Take a look inside what's left of the plastic. Break the rest of it open,
so you make sure you aren't missing anything.

I think all you will find is a fuse and some springs.
The replacement for that can be purchased at Radio Shack or an auto parts
store. You should make sure that you have a fuse, but there's nothing
magical in that plastic. Replacing it is no risk to the GPS. The 76 can
accept from 8-35v on the DC input. Have a look at the diagram in
the user's guide. No electronics at all between battery and GPS. (They
eliminated the fuse from the drawing, but they describe it in the text.)

The eTrex, on the other hand, wants 3.0VDC, so the piece of plastic that
plugs into the cigarette lighter has electronics in it, and replacing that
with a mere plug will ruin the GPS.
