Sounds believable - for some values of "just off track".
The ETE is distance/VMG, and as you turn away from the straight line
your VMG goes down, the ETE goes up.
To make 120nm take 3hrs needs VMG less than 40kt, which means you need to
be flying about 50 degrees off course.
