But you can get a pretty good estimate of the altitude in the US from
Treasurer Topos.

Hi, Rich -

GE gives the altitude if you hover the mouse over the point of interest.
But, if you put a placemark on the point of interest, GE always sets
altitude to zero for the placemark. I can't find a way to have the placemark
pick up the altitude.
