At lest here in California, the difference is far more east/west than north/south.
One of my favorite Monterey dive sites is at:
N36 46.638 W121 53.409 WGS84
N36 45.652 W121 53.348 NAD27CONUS
The diference is 298' east and 22' north.
That makes some sense, given that north/south position can be deteremined astronomically,
while east/west also requires accurate time keeping. What's truely amazing is that NAD27
was laid out with transits and measuring tape, and the difference is less than a 1F difference
in the temperature of a steel tape between "ground zero" and Cailfornia.

Yes, when it comes to UTM, the difference between NAD-27 and
NAD-83/WGS-84 is a whopping 600 feet (or more) in the
north/south direction at most latitudes in the US... (Much
less for Latitude coordinates)... So that certainly could
be a problem...
