unit. Now you want to use it with a different unit so you need to get an unlock code for that unit. Garmin will do that for you once.

Which is why I will never buy such restrictive garbage. The same shit is going to happen with Vista. Tied to one machine now and forever, never to be transferred. This is like saying I can play my dvds on only one player, forever.
I will stick with such as Fugawi, Gps Pilot, and even my current DeLorme.

The unlock process works well enough and Garmin will let you use each and every mapping package you buy with two GPS receivers. In comparison, some of their competitors only allow use with a single receiver.

I have a number of older but still useful Garmin mapping products that do not require unlocking and can still be used as many receivers as you want.

For portable and handheld use it is really an apples and oranges thing if you try to compare a good ruggedized handheld (that happens to require proprietary mapping) to applications that have open architectures for mapping but only run on PDAs, laptops, and tablet PCs.

I've done portable GPS both ways, with both PDAs and with handhelds, and the latter is the clear winner in many ways and areas. But it is not free. Until someone start selling a good handheld GPS that will let me "roll my own" mapping I'll stay with the handhelds.
