Some background: A long time ago, I used to know a little about
celestial navigation. About ten years ago, I played with a GPS a
little. Then I got my wife a Garmin C-320 for Christmas.

I was astonished to find that it *can't* display its location as
numerical lat/long, and that you *can't* key in the lat/long of a
destination. Is this most fundamental, venerable, and useful of all
navigation standards going to disappear behind a dumbed down user
interface? What can we do to prevent it?

Dumbed down receivers for dumbed down users in an increasingly dumbed down

You sir, are in some danger of being a dinosaur. But then so am I and
many other GPS users. So we keep an eye on the details and buy and use
the stuff that still does the things we want and enjoy.

Look at a StreetPilot 27xx or 28xx, or a handheld 60 or 76 Cx or CSx,
you'll find all that lovely detail that annoys the people that love the
C320.

No ridicule or insult intended, just friendly discussion.

I like to add Quest to the above list. If using in a car, the internal
rechargeable battery isn't a problem. however, I solve that problem on my
bicycle by installing a 12 volt light power supply and tapping in to it for
the Quest. http://www.billcotton.com/quest_on_bicycle.htm
The Quest comes with include map CD and the Quest 2 has the local street map
installed. On request you can get the CD.
Another plus for me is that the position for the factory install Navigation
system on my 07 Subaru has a small glove box that my Quest fit well without
the power/speaker cradle. It internal is more than enough for a local trip.
I just close the lid when I stop. For longer trips I will use the cradle and
the 12 volt adapter. I plan will make a block of material for the back of
the cradle similar to what I made for the bicycle mount.
