My questions --
Are there alternative programs to MapSource that do basically the same
thing? Not that I know anything about it, just curious if there's any
competition. I've seen a few that handle waypoints, track, etc., but not
specifically maps.
I have only found one source of maps that compete with
Garmin MapSource maps, and that's the BiciMapas maps of
Mexico:

Garmin's Mexico NT maps autoroute, but the BiciMapas maps
don't...
There are other third-party maps approved by Garmin:

Likewise, are there any alternative (free?) maps available?
Not that I know of, the Mexico maps aren't free...
