Re: Worth sending back to Garmin to "repair"?

Garmin's web site says the latest software is v4.10:

If v4.10 doesn't fix the problems, send it back. Garmin is generally very responsive.

I have a new (~3 weeks) GPSMap 76S that seems to work great.

Well, 99.999% great... Two things I've noticed --

1. Twice it has abruptly powered off when I was pressing keys with the
compass displayed, once upon Enter to start calibration and the other
(ISTR) when I held down Page to turn the compass on. It came back up
just fine and was OK both times.

2. It seems to be a little wacko about what it thinks is "level" when
the compass is on... Turning from one direction to another (90 deg +/-)
requires me to tilt it by 30 degrees or more to make the "Hold Level"
prompt disappear; i.e., it's not consistent in all azimuths. Laying it
level on my desk (which is more or less level) causes the prompt to
appear, while tilting it antenna-end up by 20 degrees makes it go away.
In one direction, at least. I'm going to test it outside tomorrow, away
from any possible interference, although I've definitely seen the issue
when outside (I've just not quantified it).

I'm at v4.00 of the firmware, the current latest. Other than the above
issues, I've seen no problems at all. Works great, and the power-offs
haven't happened again.

Are these known issues?

I don't use the compass much, in fact I usually leave it off to save
battery power. However, it's /part/ of the reason I bought the 76S
instead of a 76.

Just how degraded is the compass performance when it thinks it needs
leveling?

Should I send it back or just use it for a while and keep my eye on it
before the 1-year warranty expires? Am I running a bigger risk by
sending it off than just using it as is?

I also have a few trips planned over the next few months and don't want
my receiver falling into a black hole at Garmin when I need it. They say
7-10 working days plus shipping and I have no reason to doubt them, but
some third-party corroboration would be nice. :-)

Any opinions?

Thanks.
