Re: Driving and Sailing ... where to go from here(?)

I have been using a Garmin 12 Map for years now, and I still love it.
But a new, unanticipated problem has arisen, and I don't know where
to go from here. I would welcome any thoughts.

ON THE ROAD, I have interfaced my 12 Map with an old Win 98 laptop and
Street Atlas, and it has bailed me out of many a fix. Often on
mountain mule trails that barely appear on a paper map. But the old
laptop finally gave out. So I bought a new XP one. Unfortunately,
it didn't have a serial interface for the GPS. So I bought an USB to
Serial converter. And another. And another. After three tries, and
many, many hours, I finally just gave up and returned the new laptop,
because that was the main application that I wanted it for.

ON THE WATER, I have used the 12 Map for sailing in places like
Thailand and Australia, in unfamiliar waters, where it has bailed me
out of considerably bigger fixes. This was to have been the other
major application for the new laptop, on which I had planned to run
my old copy of Ozi Explorer, to provide me with greater capability
than the 12 Map by itself. Well, the above USB converter issue took
care of that fantasy.

So now I am stuck with only my dear old 12 Map, with no improved
capability on the water, and even less capability than before on the
road. I can't even read my emails at a motel.

Belatedly, after the above USB misadventures, I have learned from
Jack, Joe and Dale's website that some people have had success with
these USB converters. Unfortunately, just not the ones that I tried.
But since I now no longer have the laptop, I guess that fact is
pretty useless.

So, finally, I am left with the original question, where should I go
from here? I would sincerely appreciate anyone's thoughts.
(Including, I guess, even the obvious one.)

Thank you very much,
David

You would have to ascertain WHY the usb-serial converter is not working. Did
you specify it was for Win XP? I have an older one that will not work with
XP, but bought a second one which works perfectly. Are you absolutely sure
it is the converter which is not being recognised and not some other WinXP
problem, such as recognising the serial device as a serial mouse?

I think also you might also consider buying a new GPS such as the
GPSMAP60C/Cs. Mine wiorks perfectly either through it's serial port or
through it's USB interface.
