You would have to ascertain WHY the usb-serial converter is not
working. Did you specify it was for Win XP? I have an older one that
will not work with XP, but bought a second one which works
perfectly. Are you absolutely sure it is the converter which is not
being recognised and not some other WinXP problem, such as
recognising the serial device as a serial mouse?

I think also you might also consider buying a new GPS such as the
GPSMAP60C/Cs. Mine wiorks perfectly either through it's serial port
or through it's USB interface.

Thanks DP
Yes, indeed I did specify XP. And actually, two of the converters
actually did work, on the road, with the GPSr and Street Atlas up and
running -- but only for a few minutes. Then the whole business went
berserk, with the mouse pointer jumping all over the screen, and new
windows popping up and disappearing at random. I talked with Garmin
and they actually had a name for this phenomenon: "Crazy Mouse"
syndrome. And they did indeed, as you have suggested, implicate
serial mouse interactions, and we made some registry changes to
accommodate them. But that only worked for a while, and the problem
re-emerged. This was essentially the same behavior for all three
converters that I tried.

Can you please tell me the make and model of the converter that did
work for you?

Maybe I am at the point, as both you and GSV have suggested, that I
should just buy a new GPSr with a USB interface. I didn't realize
that the MAP60C/Cs had both a serial port and USB interface. Is that
true, or did I misread you?

Finally, if I am to get a new GPSr, I would want one that will
support me at least as well as my old 12MAP, on both the road and
water, even without a laptop interface. Do you feel that the 60C
would be OK for that? Or is there a better option?

This crazymouse syndrome used to be a problem with WinXP, but my
understnding is that it was corrected in Service Pack2 or some other update.
I have had problems converting friends' laptops from Win 98/Millenium to XP,
but the problem seemed to correct itself at the next switch-off/boot-up
without intervention from me.

You can change the behaviour of the GPS/serial port in Control Panel. There
is a Microsoft solution in their Knowledge Base somewhere, but don't ask me
where. Why not type in " XP recoginises GPS as serial mouse" and see what
comes up?
