If I recall correctly, one remedy for the jumping cursor problem is to
allow the computer to recognize the GPS/serial adaptor as a mouse,
then disconnect it and go to "My computer/properties/hardware/device
manager" and disable the serial mouse. The computer should remember
this setting, and let you use the GPS without interference.

A google for "USB serial problem" or similar should find lots of hits
discussing this problem, and giving solutions.

You are quite right Peter, I should have remembered that little trick, boot
up first, open your GPS program, then attach the GPS.

Although I didn't explicitly say it in my previous post, disabling the
serial mouse as described has fixed the problem - I can now boot the
computer with the GPS connected with no mousy problems.

Peter, FYI, FWIW, that's what Garmin told me that their fix did!! So maybe
there really was a unique problem with my laptop....(?) Who knows...
Thanks again,
